If the donor had the option to cover the credit card processing fees this would be a very small extra cost for them and a HUGE savings for us if widely used.

I agree that this should be an optional add-on. In a previous system we used, I used a fixed fee regardless of donation amount - $2.00 or $3.00, so no calculation was needed. We found 70-75% of donors added the $2.00. It was easy, straighforward, optional, and truly did offset a large percentage of our transaction fees, leaving more money to support our programs.
