Savvy donors realize that when they make a gift online the non-profit has to pay the credit card processing fee. During North Texas Giving Day, the communities foundation offered an optional field where the donor could check to pay that processing fee for the non profit so that the non profit received the entire gift. The Junior League of Fort Worth is also adding this option to their online giving platform. More and more donors prefer to give online and adding this option would make them feel better about making that gift online - especially those Millennial donors who are very discerning about where their money is going and are less and less likely to pay by check.

I agree that this should be an optional add-on. In a previous system we used, I used a fixed fee regardless of donation amount - $2.00 or $3.00, so no calculation was needed. We found 70-75% of donors added the $2.00. It was easy, straighforward, optional, and truly did offset a large percentage of our transaction fees, leaving more money to support our programs.
